Icing on top.

Icing on top is the name we give to a winning combination. A top notch lady DJ mans the decks while other gorgeous girls perform live on a variety of instruments. It’s a great way to create a relaxed and sophisticated ambience. A firm favourite at corporate events when people want to talk, but appreciate chilled out sounds, quality musicianship and glamorous presentation.

The flowing champagne, food, lighting and flowers are perfect. Yet something is missing. The room dims as the groove begins. A spotlight sweeps across the dance floor to a striking figure. Jaz Hudson flashes a brilliant smile as she effortlessly drops a funky cross-rhythm into the mix on her sparkly congas.

Feet are tapping, while somewhere in the darkness a sultry violin weaves a beautiful improvised melody into the beat. A siren saxophone emerges from the swirling light with a fluid jazz-line. Heads are nodding as foxy lady DJ Roxanne Roll raises the temperature and tempo in the room with an arched eyebrow and a well-manicured flick of the cross-fader.

Acappella – the voice.

This is a vast genre, too diverse to be lumped into a single section. From gospel choirs to barbershop, the rich warmth of the human voice is timelessly captivating. And with the modern masters of beat boxing, the potential for quirky, jaw-dropping displays of maverick musical skill and imagination is endless. Hip hop maestros, Gregorian choruses, swinging jazz harmonies or a soaring Puccini aria, the versatility of vocal wizzadry is as unique.

Unwinding after an intensive day-long forum, creative folk from some of the biggest names in the design world sip their mojitos in a trendy East-End warehouse. Über-cool and über-exhausted, their nonchalant networking  desperately needs an energy boost. A solitary guy is standing on stage with a microphone; ignored, until he starts to lovingly re-produce the sound of an entire drum kit. Conversation stops. The mystery beat-boxer catches the incredulous expressions around him and signals his band to join him. A battle of the beats commences with a ‘real’ drummer trading patterns and riffs with one smooth operator on the mic.

Eighties bands.

It’s not just neon socks and leg warmers that are having a resurgence. Eighties bands are enticing closet air guitarists back onto the dance floor with synth-tastic hits. Shoulder pads and crimpers at the ready, repertoires encompassing classic rock, pop, ska and reggae ensure even first-time-around sceptics enjoy the spectacle. A decade of shameless cheese on a cocktail stick of musical madness.

Roller girls greet guests with pina coladas, sporting psychadelic hot pants and leotards. The band are dressed as their favourite ‘80s heroes. On drums we have Maverick from Top Gun while Whitney brandishes the mic. Rod Stewart caresses his synthesizer and MC Hammer gets down on the bass. The crowd erupts with gleeful cheers, sweatbands and bangles punch the air to Bon Jovi, Queen and Whitesnake.
